Chronic Fatigue

Description
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME), is a debilitating condition characterized by extreme, persistent fatigue that interferes with daily functioning and isn’t relieved by sleep. Additional symptoms often include cognitive dysfunction ("brain fog"), unrefreshing sleep, muscle pain, and post-exertional malaise (PEM), where even light activity can trigger days of worsening symptoms. Functional medicine investigates root causes such as mitochondrial dysfunction, viral reactivation (e.g. EBV), mold exposure, gut dysbiosis, and nutrient deficiencies. The goal is to restore energy production and reduce immune and inflammatory burdens using a personalized, step-by-step approach.
Symptoms
Persistent, unrelenting fatigue
Brain fog or poor memory
Post-exertional malaise (PEM)
Sleep disturbances or unrefreshing sleep
Muscle or joint pain
Headaches
Sensitivity to light, sound, or chemicals
Dizziness or orthostatic intolerance
Mood swings or depression
Frequent infections or sore throats
Labs & Testing Options
Mitochondrial function (organic acids, carnitine, CoQ10)
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), CMV, HHV-6 panels
Mycotoxin (mold) testing
Adrenal and cortisol rhythm (Blood levels, ZRT or salivary)
Nutrient panels (B12, D, magnesium, zinc)
Gut testing (GI-MAP, stool analysis, leaky gut markers)
Autoimmune and inflammatory markers (CRP, ANA, TGF-β1)
Thyroid panel (TSH, Free T3/T4, reverse T3)
Treatment Options
Mitochondrial support (CoQ10, PQQ, carnitine, B vitamins)
Antiviral herbs or medications (if viral reactivation present)
Adaptogens and adrenal support
Sleep hygiene and circadian regulation
Anti-inflammatory and gut-healing diet
IV nutrient therapy (e.g. glutathione, B-complex, magnesium)
Mold detox and lymphatic drainage (if applicable)
Pacing and energy conservation techniques
