GERD/Reflux

Description
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid or contents frequently flow backward into the esophagus due to a weakened lower esophageal sphincter (LES). This backflow can irritate the lining of the esophagus, causing symptoms like heartburn, regurgitation, and even respiratory issues. Functional medicine looks deeper than acid suppression, identifying root causes like low stomach acid (hypochlorhydria), hiatal hernia, bacterial overgrowth, food sensitivities, or poor motility. Long-term reliance on acid blockers may worsen digestion and mineral absorption. Functional treatment focuses on restoring stomach function, healing the mucosa, and addressing dietary and structural contributors to reflux.
Symptoms
Heartburn (burning chest sensation)
Acid regurgitation
Chronic cough or sore throat
Hoarseness or voice changes
Sensation of a lump in the throat
Nausea after eating
Difficulty swallowing
Bloating or burping
Dental enamel erosion
Symptoms worse when lying down
Labs & Testing Options
Heidelberg or Betaine HCl challenge test (for stomach acid levels)
SIBO breath test
Food sensitivity testing
GI-MAP or stool testing (gut flora imbalances)
Endoscopy (if persistent symptoms or red flags)
H. pylori stool antigen or breath test
Esophageal pH monitoring (in conventional GI workup)
Treatment Options
Apple cider vinegar or Betaine HCl (if low acid confirmed)
Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) and aloe vera for mucosal healing
Elimination of trigger foods (gluten, dairy, caffeine, alcohol, spicy foods)
Prokinetic support (ginger, Iberogast)
Melatonin for LES tone and mucosal support
Chiropractic or bodywork for structural support (e.g., hiatal hernia)
Lifestyle changes: smaller meals, not lying down after eating, weight loss
Gradual tapering off acid-blockers (under medical supervision)
